Football Coach Disarms Potential Shooter and Hugs Him.

Security footage of a highschool football coach being hailed a hero after he disarmed a potential school shooter is going viral across social media. The video shows the coach hand off the gun to another teacher as he embraces the student. It would seem he did this to not only keep the student from getting back to the shotgun but to calm him down as well. According to various reports the student claims he only planned to kill himself and no one else.

ABCNews reports that Keanon Lowe, a football and track and field coach at Parkrose High School, can be seen walking through the hallways and entering a classroom on May 17.

When he next emerges, he is holding a shotgun and backing away from student Angel Granados-Diaz before another teacher comes up and takes the weapon away.

Then, in an extraordinary moment, Lowe embraces Granados-Diaz and the two hug for at least a minute.

At one point, it appears that Granados-Diaz tries to break free, but Lowe continues to hold on to him.

Police eventually arrive and take Granados-Diaz into custody.

Lowe was hailed a hero following the incident at the Portland high school.

“This was a best-case scenario,” Portland Police Sergeant Brad Yakots said at the time. “The staff members from all accounts did an excellent job.”

Granados-Diaz, who is now 19,was suffering from a mental health crisis at the time and has pleaded guilty to two charges and was sentenced to three years of probation Oct. 10 According to KATU. As part of the deal, he will receive immediate mental health and substance abuse treatment, the district attorney’s office said. Police said Granados-Diaz’s gun had one round in it.
