So maybe Rio wasn’t the best place to have the Olympics?

Tiago-Brandao-RodriguesThe Mirror writes

The Rio 2016 Olympic games have been rocked by more trouble after it emerged the Olympic security chief had been attacked after he left the opening ceremony.

The Olympics security chief was attacked as he left the Games opening ceremony by a knife-wielding robber who was shot dead by a cop.

Felipe Seixas was walking to his car near the Maracanã Stadium early on Saturday when he was set upon by four men brandishing knives.

A policeman with him shot one of the assailants dead and the others fled.

Authorities have attempted to hush up details of the shooting, which is a monumental embarrassment to crime-plagued Rio 2016 bosses.

The security chief himself became a mugging target after committing 10,000 security forces to protect the extravaganza.

The Daily Mail writes-

Security at Rio 2016 was seriously undermined when a bullet was fired through the roof of a media center at the 36F1C35400000578-0-image-a-34_1470508140675equestrian venue — and a controlled explosion had to be carried out near the finish of the men’s cycling road race.

With 20 different sports in action on day one, there were logistical problems — including two-mile queues to get through security, which left many venues half-empty — buses taking competitors to the shooting venue got lost and a man was shot dead outside the Maracana after a botched robbery.

There were about 50 people inside a photographer’s workroom at the Deodoro venue where many British equestrian riders will go for gold over the next fortnight when the bullet entered, scorching a hole through the canvas roof.

Oh and not to mention that Rio is basically a giant sewage spill, NY Times says-

Clarke-Sailing-Through-the-Trash-and-Sewage-of-Guanabara-Bay-1200Among the things Olympic sailors have reported seeing while training in and testing out the venues of Guanabara Bay, one of the sites for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, are mattresses, cars, washing machines, trees, tables, televisions, couches, and chairs, as well as dead dogs, horses, and cats. The Brazilian sailor Lars Grael, a two-time Olympic medalist, told the Times last year that he has seen human bodies on four separate occasions.

Now, with one year left before the Summer Games, and with another round of sailing test events just concluded, Olympic officials are downplaying reports on the heavily polluted water venues, most notably a five-month investigation conducted by the Associated Press, which found the waters “chronically contaminated,” and revealed dangerously high levels of viruses and bacteria from human sewage.
