Suspect arrested in shooting of Georgia sheriff’s deputy

Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said the arrest of Joe Lee Garrett, 24, was made just hours after the shooting. Garrett was transferred to Russell County Jail, WTVM-TV reported.

(FOX)- Taylor said Garrett turned himself into a Phenix City Police investigator late Saturday. He’s being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. The station reported he’s being held as a fugitive from justice in relation to the shooting.

Police are still investigating the shooting and no other arrests have been made.

A Harris County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after he was shot in the head Saturday during a traffic stop on Interstate 185. Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley said the shooting took place at around 7:30 p.m.

The deputy suffered a single shot to the face, above the left eye while walking up to the vehicle.

Jolley said three people were inside a 1994 blue Chevrolet Caprice that fled the scene after the shooting. Police are searching for the two other people who were inside the vehicle.

Deputies said the vehicle was caught on dash cam video.
