Protesters Gather in El Cajon Prompting Police Response

NBC reports-

Police are asking drivers to avoid Broadway and N. Mollison Avenue in El Cajon after a group of protestors took to the streets.

El Cajon Police (ECPD) say protesters had gathered on the 700 block of Broadway around 6 p.m. Monday. They referred to the situation as “civil unrest.”

At approximately 7:30 p.m., police had issued a traffic advisory to motorists to avoid the area.

“Black Lives Matter” protesters took to the streets on Friday, more than two weeks after the police shooting of Alfred Olango.

Olango,38, was shot and killed on Sept. 27 by El Cajon Police officers Richard Gonsalves and Josh McDaniel in the parking lot behind the Los Panchos restaurant in the 800 block of Broadway in El Cajon.

Olango’s sister said she had called for help three times in the span of 50 minutes because her brother needed help. But within minutes of arriving on scene, police shot Olango.

Police said Olango had been acting “erratically” when officers arrived on scene and refused to remove his hands out of the pockets of his pants. At one point, he drew a device out of his pocket, which was later identified to be a vaping device. Officer McDaniel deployed a taser at Olango while Officer Gonsalves fired multiple rounds from his gun.

Olango’s death sparked days of protests in El Cajon, some of which were peaceful, others violent.

On Monday, citizens told NBC 7 the protest began because a memorial for Olango, set up near the restaurant, was taken down on Sunday.

According to El Cajon Police, some protesters were detained for questioning but it’s unclear how many.

No other information was immediately available.
