Police officer in Washington state shot; suspect in custody

Authorities say a suspected gunman is in custody following the shooting of a police officer in Washington State on Thursday night.

(FOX)- Officials say a “primary suspect” was taken into custody early Friday, following an hourslong standoff, along with two other suspects.

An officer was shot and critically wounded while responding to a call that a man had been shot in Mount Vernon, about 60 miles north of Seattle.

The 61-year-old officer was taken to the hospital. A spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center in Seattle said the officer suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He is now in serious but stable condition following surgery for his injuries.

“The suspect who allegedly shot at officers barricaded himself in a residence … and continued to fire shots at officers on scene throughout the evening,” the patrol said in a statement. “Officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene and closed roads in the immediate area. Hostage negotiators spent several hours communicating with the suspect.”

No other details on the developments were immediately available, but they follow a standoff in the town where a suspect had been barricaded inside a house and firing at officers.
