Off-duty Fort Worth cop investigating robbery shoots man who pointed box cutter at deputy

(DallasMorningNews)- An off-duty Fort Worth police officer shot a man believed to be a robbery suspect late Wednesday after he pointed a silver object that turned out to be a box cutter.

Just before midnight police responded to Las Vegas Trail and Normandale Street in West Fort Worth, where a man said a robber armed with a chrome handgun mugged him.

An officer and a Tarrant County sheriff’s deputy, who was also off-duty, were working security a short distance away. They were both in uniform and in a marked police car.

They spotted a man matching the description of the suspect. They ordered him to stop as he walked in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 8700 block of Normandale, but he kept walking.

They approached the man, again demanding that  he stop, and he turned. He pulled out a silver object and pointed it at the deputy. The officer, who thought the man was about to attack the deputy, fired twice and struck the man once.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The object he pointed at the deputy and officer was a box cutter.
