Limited manufacturing, ‘panic buying,’ causes low stock of ammo in Las Vegas

If toilet paper was last year’s hot commodity, this year it’s guns and ammunition.

Scenes like one with long lines outside a gun store in Utah are becoming increasingly more common where gun owners are lining up to stock up on supplies.

Marcus Miller is a Las Vegas gun owner, he says he’s never seen it like this before.

“I went to Walmart, Designated Gun Stores on Las Vegas Boulevard. Everybody’s out of stock. When I asked somebody what’s going on they said, well due to COVID and everything,” said Miller.

At The Range 702 off I-15, customers can only purchase limited amounts of ammunition and that’s if it’s even available to begin with.

“It’s literally ever caliber right now. We’re having trouble stocking it. And it doesn’t matter what it is. There are certain calibers that are just completely out and dry, and there are others that are limited,” said The Range 702 General Manager Kris Chanski.

Pandemic-related delays at manufacturing plants are mostly to blame but some say a change government on the national level may also contribute to so-called “panic buying”

Chanski says there’s also another factor. “There’s an influx of new gun ownership. We have not seen this many new gun owners, ever,” she said. Essentially it comes down to basic supply and demand.

For Marcus, he’s hoping eventually things will return to somewhat normal. “Maybe not like stockpile way to the ceiling, but enough to where you can at least get a few boxes of what you’re looking for,” he said.
