Justice Merrick Garland, What You Need to Know About Obama’s Supreme Court Nominee

Merrick Garland

Earlier this morning in a press conference, President Barrack Obama submitted his nomination for Supreme Court justice. Unsurprisingly his nomination was as suspected, DC Circuit Court Chief Justice Merrick Garland. Garland, who is claimed to be a “moderate”, has a lot of left-leaning views such as those on gun control.

In 1993 when the NICS background check law was enacted, it was made clear that the names of people having the checks done on them was not to remain in any system. Merrick Garland along with David S. Tatel voted to keep an illegal registration of names of gun buyers during the Clinton Administration.

In 2007, Merrick Garland voted to keep repeal a D.C. court decision to allow citizens the right to possess handguns. Again he voted with the highly liberal Judge David Tatel to remove constitutional rights of Americans. This action solidified his position on the Second Amendment.

The nomination of Merrick Garland to the US Supreme Court has been a long time coming. Slowly climbing up the judicial ladder, he had the full backing of Bill Clinton when he was appointed to the DC Circuit in 1997. In 2013 he became the Chief Judge of Washington DC.

It is very convenient for Obama and the Democratic Party that Scalia passed away in Obama’s last term. Nominating Justice Merrick Garland is the first move in many by Obama to strip away constitutional gun rights in his last few months in office.

A new bill was proposed on Tuesday by Democrat from California, Jackie Speier, to prohibit the importation of “assault rifles”. The list would include semi-automatic rifles, such as “Russian AK-47s”, that Speier says “Are not suitable or readily adaptable for sporting purposes.” Even though the Russian AK-47, and other russian firearms and ammo are already banned due to sanctions under Obama’s Executive Order 13661.
