German Container Ship Attacked By Pirates

According to Atlas.news

A German container ship owned by #Hamburg-based Bernhard Schulte Ship management was attacked by pirates on speedboats off the coast of west #Africa in the Gulf of Guinea on Friday. There were no reported injuries as the crew followed emergency procedures. Although kidnappings associated with piracy has been decreasing worldwide, the area has become a hotbed for pirate activity, with the number of reported incidents increasing from 78 in 2018 to 121 in 2019. The International Maritime Bureau reports that 82 percent of global reported kidnappings happen in the Gulf of Guinea. #German Institute for International and Security Affairs specialist Wolf Kinzel said that piracy is caused by “Lack of prospects, lack of consequences due to inadequate criminal prosecution, corruption and thus a quite understandable lack of trust in state actors,” adding that pollution has made careers in farming, herding, and fishing unsustainable, forcing some to more extreme measures of earning money.
