ORLANDO – Responding to a growing concern stemming from advancements in 3D printing, Senator Linda Stewart (D-Orlando) has filed legislation to regulate 3D-printed firearms.
SB 372 requires 3D-printed firearms contain at least four ounces of metal and prohibits the use of specific plastic polymers in the creation of a 3D-printed firearm. The specified polymers are resilient enough to withstand the combustion required to fire a projectile and are undetectable by metal detectors.
“These guns are undetectable and untraceable – meaning anyone with access to a 3D printer can gain access to a deadly firearm,” said Stewart. “This bill is about keeping guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.”
The bill requires that anyone in possession of a 3D-printed firearm that does not comply with the requirements of the law must destroy or relinquish the weapon to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Violators of the law would face a 3rd-degree felony.
