Airman who disappeared during late-night swim off Guam coast presumed dead

Officials at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam said Sunday that an airman who disappeared during a late night swim off a beach is presumed dead.

(FOX)- The base’s 36th Wing said in a news release that search-and-recovery efforts that began after Master Sgt. Greg Ramos of the Hawaii National Guard was reported missing at around midnight Nov. 21 have produced no signs of him.

Authorities were alerted to a missing swimmer off Tarague Beach. They continued their search through Saturday. The cause of death was still under investigation, according to Pacific Daily News.

Brig. Gen. Douglas Cox, the 36th Wing commander, said the military is “extremely saddened” and he offered prayers for Ramos’ family and friends. He cautioned that while “the waters off Guam are beautiful and inviting,” they can be dangerous.

Tarague, Serena and Scout beaches on the base were closed until further notice.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
