Witnesses reported to police seeing a vehicle crash into the Kum & Go on E Chestnut Expressway after 11 p.m. Sunday night.
A gunman emerged from the vehicle, entered the store and started shooting. “Two officers arrived at the scene and were shot at by the gunman”, Police Chief Paul Williams said.
One of the officers was struck by gunfire and died at the scene, a second officer was also struck but is expected to make a full recovery.
Upon arriving at the scene, backup officers found 3 deceased civilians, 1 other injured civilian, an injured officer, 1 deceased officer, and a deceased gunman by a self-inflicted wound.
Williams identified the officer killed as Christopher Walsh. He had worked for the department for three and a half years, was an Army veteran and was active in the Army Reserves.
