A police officer was fatally shot in Newport, Arkansas Monday evening and the suspected shooter was on the run.
The incident occurred in the Remmel Park area—several agencies were responding to the park and K9s were deployed in the search.
It was unclear what led up to the gunfire but police confirmed the officer was on-duty.

The unidentified officer was taken to hospital but later died, state police said.
Residents were asked to avoid the area.
