Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon and the police officer who shot Daunte Wright, Kim Potter both resigned on Tuesday.
Police officer Kim Potter shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright on Sunday night during a traffic stop.
Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon came under fire after he called the shooting of Daunte Wright an “accidental discharge.”
“It is my belief that the officer had the intention to employ their taser, but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet,” he said.
Civil rights activists and reporters lashed out at Gannon and called for him to be fired.
Gannon and Potter both resigned on Tuesday.
Tuesday, Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter and Police Chief Tim Gannon have resigned from their positions.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified Potter as the officer who shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center Sunday.
The letter, included with the release, reads,
Dear Mayor Elliott, Mr. Edwards and Chief Gannon:
I am tendering my resignation from the Brooklyn Center Police Department effective immediately. I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately.
