Newton County standoff ends with one suspect shot, one arrested

NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — A standoff in Newton County ended early Friday morning after more than 12 hours with one suspect being arrested and one being taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

The standoff began Thursday afternoon after the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a disturbance and assault in the Gist area according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

When a Newton County deputy arrived at the location off County Road 3136  after the 3:30 p.m. call two suspects at the location fired a warning shot according to the release.

One of them intimated that he was going to blow up a tractor but instead set it on fire.

The deputy called for help and as other deputies arrived the two began firing at them the release said.
