Anxiety is severely heightened when a mother receives a phone call explaining that their son or daughter has been involved in an accident, but the accident that was explained to Sandra Seanez about her daughter, left her paralyzed and speechless.
Sandra’s daughter (name not to be mentioned) had received a scholarship to play track and field at Concordia University. She had everything going for her until one tragic day practicing for the long jump late February 2015. This particular practice was at a private school that is rented out for the Concordia track and field students. Sandra’s daughter set herself on the long jump path and prepared for her jump. She leaped into action, took her strides, and then sprang into her jump. She stretched her feet out full forward in hopes to obtain the maximum length for her jump. She came down hard and was instantly engulfed in immense pain. As her trainers rushed to her aid, they carefully pulled her from the sand to find that she had something protruding from the bottom of her shoe. Upon assessment the staff realized that a flat head screwdriver had been lodged in the bottom of shoe and through the top of her foot. The staff immediately stabilized her foot and the object for transport. She was rushed her to the ER! Sandra’s daughter of course survived the incident, but currently suffers from ligament, nerve, bone, and muscle damage. Despite the relief that Sandra’s daughter would be OK; several questions came to mind about this accident. Was this truly and accident? Why was there a flat head screw driver in the sand pit? Was the screw driver strategically placed in the pit with the sharp end facing the jumper to inflict the most amount of pain? If so, who and why would someone do such a thing? Is this carelessness from the private school?
After hearing this tragic short story, what do you think the family should do? The daughter had a scholarship to attend this school to play track and field. The damage from the carelessness of this private school could ruin the dreams for this young woman. Should the family take action? Please comment below and share your input.
