Trump coming to St. Charles on Wednesday

Make St. Charles Great Again!

STL Today reports

WASHINGTON • President Donald Trump will give a tax-reform speech in St. Charles Wednesday afternoon, the White House confirmed Monday.

Details were still being worked out, but the speech will come as the U.S. Senate is debating a Republican overhaul of the tax code that GOP senators say will boost economic growth. Democrats oppose it, calling it tilted toward favoring the rich, and saying that it will add to the federal debt.

Trump also chose Missouri, which will host a pivotal Senate race in 2018, to give another tax-reform speech in August. In it, he challenged Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., to support tax cuts or risk being turned out of office by voters next year.

Details of the time and location of Wednesday’s speech were still being worked out Monday by the White House.

Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., who traveled to Springfield, Mo., with Trump for the August speech, has been a leading advocate of the GOP tax reform efforts in the Senate.

Trump on Monday posted several positive tweets about the plan, including one that suggests more fixes were on the way.

But McCaskill has increasingly been a critic. She opened hearings of the Senate Finance Committee perusing the legislation by criticizing Republicans for writing the legislation largely in secret, for not simplifying the code enough, and for giving corporate tax breaks in greater proportion to those of individuals.

Prior to Thanksgiving, McCaskill had characterized herself as “angry and disappointed” over GOP tax plan.
