Gov. Nikki Haley released a statement saying: “As we work together with law enforcement to make sure they have the support they need to investigate what happened in Townville, Michael and I ask that everyone across South Carolina join us in praying for the entire Townville Elementary School family and those touched by today’s tragedy.”
Haley is expected to arrive in the Upstate early Wednesday evening to talk about the shooting. A news conference on the shooting is expected before her arrival.
Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Sheila Cole said the shooting happened shortly after 1 p.m. at the school at 105 State Road in Townville in Anderson County.
Armed officers were at the school before 2 p.m. Multiple law enforcement vehicles lined the driveway.
Parents were waiting nearby and children were being brought out of the back of the school.
The evacuated students were moved by bus to Oakdale Baptist Church at 6724 Highway 24 in Townville. Family members were being asked to go to the church, not to the school.
Officers were walking on the roof of the school as other deputies and officers cleared the building. Two helicopters landed in a field by the school.
The Anderson County Coroner’s Office is investigating a death on Osborne Road in Townville that officials said is connected with the shooting at the school. The location is a little more than 3 miles from school.
The coroner’s office said a man was found dead at the home, and that he died before the shooting at the school.
Investigators confirmed that the death has a “direct connection” to the shooting at the school.
Jamie Meredith, a student’s mother, spoke to News 4’s Mandy Gaither just after she was reunited with her daughter.
“I just pray for those families. I pray for those kids,” she said. “I thank God it wasn’t mine, but I feel so bad for them and I’m just going to pray that they’re OK and I don’t know if they’re my daughter’s classmates or they’re somebody I knew. I don’t know. (I) just feel so bad.
“She said they went in the bathroom. I don’t know how they knew to go in the bathroom, but I know her teacher was shaken up. I know all the kids were scared. There was a bunch of kids crying. She didn’t talk for about 5 minutes when I got her.
“I’m just so scared. I don’t even want her to go to school now.”
