1 suspect dead, 2 good Samaritans injured after Kansas Walmart parking lot shootout

A bloody midday shootout in a Kansas Walmart parking lot left one person dead, two injured and a suspect on the lam, police said.

(NYDailyNews)- An unidentified 39-year-old Kansas City woman had just finished shopping at a Walmart in suburban Shawnee and was about to put her infant daughter in her car around 1:30 p.m. Sunday when John W. Simmons III snuck up behind her together with an unidentified accomplice.

Even though she was carrying a baby, the two goons struck the woman in the back of the head with an unidentified object, a police spokeswoman told the Daily News.

It was not immediately clear why the brutal pair struck the woman — but the situation quickly turned even more violent when two good Samaritans intervened as they heard screaming.

Simmons III shot an unidentified 33-year-old Kansas City man several times after he rushed to the woman’s aid. The man underwent surgery and remained in critical condition at an area hospital early Tuesday.

A second man, 36, reacting to the sound of gunfire, pulled out a his own gun and fatally shot Simmons. That man was interviewed and released and cops did not expect to charge him.
